efcom donates 3000€ to Ludwig Dern school(Offenbach) Since the PISA study, educational issues have been brought to the public spotlight again. One might think of further development of secondary schools, or establishing full-day learning institutions. Although the aim of this process is to provide good education for our children, even more so in these times of globalization where the ‘pressure to perform’ is constant. A lot of parents do not take these issues into account. These families have a weak social status and often struggle with unemployment, or drug abuse. The Ludwing Dern school in Offenbach provides specialized education for children from these social backgrounds. The school has a total of 300 pupils, with more than half are migrant students. Many of these children have to face living without the bare essentials. Often, they can not afford a sandwich or an apple for breakfast. Poverty is not always the reason for this situation, which becomes apparent when working with these particular children. The school can not prevent a lack of support from parents, but nevertheless can provide support, by its own means. Educationalists teach the children general knowledge and the very basic means for everyday life, e.g. “how do I prepare a healthy and tasty meal”? This is taught in a practical manner, using the local school kitchen facility. Furthermore, the school has its own cafeteria, which is also used to educate in the framework of an “Arbeitslehre” lesson. The main focus is not only to learn something in a didactial manner, but also to acquire social competencies. In addition, these facilities provide a basic supply of food for the children. To support these facilities in the future, the Ludwig Dern school needs your financial support. A very important factor is the cost per meal. In order to keep the price per meal low for the students, the Ludwig-Dern needs help from private business institutions. Mrs. Brigitte Winter, who is a member of the ‘friends of the Ludwig Dern school’, stated that this association developed a plan how to provide the children with healthy food. Many children are not bringing food from home - as a result they are unfocused and are not able to work consistently. This year, the ‘friends of the Ludwig Dern school’ are supporting the school, to lower prices on morning rolls, as well as to reduce the prices for lunch. The association does not have the financial means to support this service for a long time frame. This is the reason why external donations, such as from the efcom gmbh are of particular importance. The school's principal, Mrs. Rühl, stated that the interest in buying the school's food has sufficiently increased.
